Fixing An Inflatable Toy Air Blower

Its a lovely day and the kids are at you to get their inflatable toys out so you rummage around the shed and from the dark depths of the furthest corner you find it. After sweating and panting you drag it out and set it up. All seems well, the kids are starry eyed and buzzing with excitement. You turn it on and there's NOTHING not a thing. Time to fix it.

Step 1 - Initial checks

Before we break open the tool box and start stripping it apart we need to remember the first thing to do is the initial checks.
  1. Check the power cable for damage such as frayed cables and kinks where the wires may have broken.
  2. Check the fuse by taking it out and trying it in another electrical item or just replacing it with the correct rated fuse.
  3. Does it make a sound when turned on? If it makes a hum then the motor is trying to go so turn it off before it burns out.

Step 2 - Removing the case

All air blowers are different so bare that in mind as we go on to removing the case.
This particular air blower is a Huawei.
Before removing the case MAKE SURE IT'S UNPLUGGED.
To remove the case we have to remove the grill and grill cover on the outlet (where the air comes out).
They are both held together and on the body with 4 small Torx head bolts and 4 nuts.
Once the grill cover and grill are removed the case is held together with the same Torx bolts and nuts so undo all of them taking care not to lose the bolts if they come out of their hexagonal holding slots.

Step 3 - Freeing the motor and fan.

With the air blower unplugged and safe the next thing we need to do is attempt to move the fan and motor shaft.
Start by freeing it from dirt and debris by blowing build up from behind the fan plate with compressed air then use some spray lubricant on the shaft behind the fan and them on the front of the fan plate where there is a holding cap.
Slowly rotate it each way a little until it feels like it's becoming free and carry on rotating it all the way around. If it still feels stiff leave it overnight with a good coating of spray lubricant and by the morning it will, more often than not, have freed itself and will ready for reassembly.

Step 4-Reassembly.

Lets get it back together.
  • Fit the sides back together with the torx head bolts and nuts. Make sure the nuts are in the holes properly to ensure a correct tight fit. Loosely fix all bolts in position and then tighten opposite bolts.
  • Fit the grill cover and grill back to the outlet making sure the bolts line up through the grill and into the outlet.
Now it's the moment of truth, plug it in and switch it on.....and IT WORKS.
Fixed like a pro, your happy, the kids are happy. Well done now get it on the inflatable toy and sit back and watch your kids enjoy the fruits of your labor why you enjoy a well deserved deserved rest.
