How To - Mix and Apply filler

If you have never used filler before this will help you overcome holes and cracks in plasterboard or woodwork.

It comes in many packages and brands but I only use a less expensive brand of filler like the Ever build all purpose filler that I always find works just as well.

This is a part of a Pantry renovation project and you can see my post here.

Filling Holes and Cracks with Ever build all purpose filler (or other brands).

What you need -

  • Filler.
  • Scraper / trowel.
  • Tin or bowl.
  • 60 grit sand paper.

Step 1 - Mixing the filler.

You always want a to mix a little more than what you think you will need just in case you notice a little hole or it just doesn't quite cover it.

Pour the filler in the tin and slowly add small amounts of water whilst stirring until you have made a thick mousse like paste.
You can also add PVA glue for a thicker and stickier Filler.
Ensure there is no lumps of unmixed filler.

Step 2 - Remove all loose plaster and paint.

There's no point in filling in a hole which is most likely going to get bigger as it's just barely hanging on the wall.

Scrape and sand lightly around the area to make sure the problem area isn't going to grow when filler is added. Then remove any debris from the area ready for filling.

Step 3 - Applying the filler

Use the scraper or trowel to apply the filler evenly over the crack / hole making sure to not take too much of the top or you will end up sanding and re applying more filler.
Leave the filler until it has dried and is uniform in colour.

Step 4 - Enter the Sand paper.

Lightly sand the filler down with some 60 grit sand paper.
Use your hand or a small block of wood wrapped in sand paper as any mechanical help is complete overkill.

Now all you need to do is clean off the filler dust and your ready for decorating.

Well done you have just filled in those dreaded holes and cracks.
