How To Remove Black Mould

Like many people I try long and hard to stop getting black mould on my ceilings and walls.

I have tried many things and there seems to be only one way to stop the build up of this mould and that is

  • leave windows and vents open all year round, which is awful for the heating bill in the winter.
  • Crank the heating up in the winter to keep the walls and ceilings dry.

This is a big problem if you want to be warm in the winter as turn the heating up and open windows is counter productive.

As I tend to ignore the advice in the want to stay warm and not pay over the odds for gas I end up cleaning the mould every spring.
I live in a ex-council house which tend to be more prone to black mould than others for a reason I don't know.

These are pictures of my downstairs cupboard I'm converting to a pantry which you can see my Pantry project here.
It has been left unattended for a a couple of years as it was full from top to bottom.
As you can see the mould covered most things.
I fight this fight every spring and there's a lot of advice but none work for me other than good old fashioned elbow grease.

What I use -

  • Hot soapy water in a bucket
  • Face mask
  • Old clean rag that you wont mind throwing away.
  • Antibacterial spray.
  • Anti mould or exterior masonry paint for touch ups.

What to do -
  • Wearing the face mask, scrub the thick off with the hot soapy water and old rag.
  • Spray with the antibacterial spray and leave for 5 minutes for it to kill the leftover spores and germs and then wipe down.
  • leave to dry and use an anti mould paint to touch the paint up.
If you scrub the paint to hard to remove every last bit you will see the paint starts to smear and come off. The spores do leave a stain so you will need to touch up the paint. I recommend Anti mould or exterior masonry paint as it reduces the amount of mould next time.

Good Luck
